Why Regular Dental Checkups Matter

Preventive care is the cornerstone of good oral health. Learn why biannual dental visits are essential for your smile.
If you're brushing twice a day and flossing, do you really need to come in for a cleaning every six months? In a word: yes. Here's the honest reasoning behind why we — and every reputable dentist — keep recommending it.
What we actually do at a checkup
A routine dental visit isn't just a polish. It's a quiet, careful inspection of dozens of small things that can go wrong silently — long before you'd ever feel them.
- Hygiene cleaning. Tartar (calcified plaque) cannot be removed by brushing. It builds up around the gumline and below it, and once it's there it has to be scaled off with professional instruments.
- Periodontal probing. We measure the depth of the pocket between your gum and tooth. Increasing depth is the earliest sign of gum disease — often before any pain or visible change.
- X-rays (annually). Decay between teeth, hidden infections at the root, and bone loss only show up on X-rays. We use low-dose digital imaging.
- Oral cancer screening. A quick visual and palpation exam of your tongue, cheeks, and throat. Catching oral cancer early dramatically improves outcomes.
- Bite check. Worn enamel, cracked fillings, and grinding patterns are easy to miss yourself.
Why "I feel fine" isn't enough
The hard truth about most dental disease is that it doesn't hurt until it's late. A small cavity is silent. A growing periodontal pocket is silent. A cracked filling is silent. By the time something hurts, the treatment usually involves more than just a filling — root canals, crowns, and extractions are downstream consequences of small problems we didn't catch in time.
Six-month cleanings exist to catch the small problems while they're still small.
The financial argument for prevention
Most dental insurance plans cover preventive care (cleanings, exams, X-rays) at 100%. They cover restorative care (fillings, crowns, root canals) at 50–80%, and major work (implants, full-arch restorations) often even less. The math works in favor of prevention every time:
- A routine checkup: usually free with insurance
- Filling a small cavity: a few hundred dollars
- Root canal + crown after that cavity went untreated: $2,000–$3,500
What about kids?
Children should start visiting the dentist by their first birthday, then every 6 months. Childhood cavities are surprisingly common and can affect adult tooth development if untreated. We see kids of all ages and pride ourselves on making the visits easy and stress-free.
What if it's been a while?
If you haven't been in for years, you're not alone — and we never lecture or shame patients about gaps in care. The first visit back is usually a thorough exam, X-rays, and one or more cleaning appointments depending on how much buildup is present. From there, we get you back on a normal six-month rhythm.
