Is Invisalign Right for You?
By Dr. Harut Hakobyan, Olive Dental Studio · Burbank, CA
Discover if clear aligner therapy is the right choice for your orthodontic needs and lifestyle.
Invisalign is one of the most popular ways adults are straightening their teeth in 2026 — and for good reason. Clear aligners are nearly invisible, removable, and often more comfortable than traditional braces. But they're not the right answer for every case. Here's an honest look at when Invisalign makes sense, when it doesn't, and what to expect.
What Invisalign actually is
Invisalign is a series of clear plastic aligner trays, custom-made to fit your teeth. Each tray moves your teeth a small, planned amount; you wear it for 1–2 weeks before swapping to the next one in the series. Over the full course of treatment, your teeth shift gradually into the planned final position.
Aligners are worn 20–22 hours a day. You take them out only to eat, drink anything but water, and brush. The plastic is thin, smooth, and most patients adjust within a few days.
What Invisalign treats well
- Mild to moderate crowding
- Spacing or gaps between teeth
- Mild to moderate overbite, underbite, and crossbite
- Relapse from previous orthodontic work (very common)
- Specific tooth rotations or tipping
What Invisalign is NOT the best fit for
This is the part most marketing materials don't tell you:
- Severe bite problems often need traditional braces or surgery, not aligners.
- Significant rotations of canines or premolars can be tough to fully correct with aligners alone.
- Unfinished jaw growth in young teens may be better suited to traditional braces.
- Complex extraction cases where teeth need to be removed and gaps closed are sometimes more predictable with brackets.
An honest dentist will tell you which category your case falls into. At Olive Dental Studio, we evaluate each case carefully and only recommend Invisalign if it's likely to deliver the result you actually want.
What to expect during treatment
Length: Most adult cases run 6–18 months. Simple alignment (mild crowding, gap closure) can be done in 6 months or less. More complex cases run longer.
Visits: You'll come in every 6–8 weeks so we can check progress and hand you the next series of trays.
Day-to-day: The first 2–3 days with a new tray feel tight (which is the point — the pressure is what moves the teeth). After that, you'll barely notice them. Some cases require small tooth-colored "attachments" — bumps bonded to your teeth that help the aligner grip — which look like nothing on the trays but are visible briefly when the trays come out.
Eating: No restrictions. You take the aligners out before any meal or drink (other than water), brush briefly, and pop them back in.
Cost and insurance
Invisalign in the Los Angeles area typically ranges from $4,000 to $7,500 depending on case complexity. Many dental insurance plans include orthodontic coverage that applies to Invisalign — usually $1,000–$3,000 lifetime. CareCredit and in-house payment plans can break the cost into manageable monthly payments.
Retention
This is where most Invisalign cases succeed or fail long-term. Teeth want to drift back toward their original position; without retainers worn nightly (sometimes for life), some relapse is common. We make every patient retainers at the end of treatment and review the wear schedule with you.
